Kristy Erickson: My Cecil Story
"I hated math until my ninth-grade teacher changed my outlook on it by getting me to believe in myself thanks to her encouragement and her assurance that there can be more than one way to solve a problem. She never put me down if I didn’t get a concept on the first try, and she let me know it was fine if I took longer than the other students because I was writing everything out. From that point on, I knew I was going to teach math and replicate her actions in my classes.
We have a really strong math program here. Students who have transferred to four-year schools will often tell me how well Cecil prepared them. They felt like they were on top of their classes, and that is a huge compliment to our department. It just speaks volumes for what we are doing.
I feel like I am part of a family at Cecil. Everyone is willing to work with you. It’s OK if you don’t know something, and it’s important to talk to your instructors. That’s why we’re here, and that’s why we’re learning."
