How do I schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor?

Academic advising is available by appointment at your convenience. Call 410-287-1000 to schedule an appointment. Academic advising is always available on a walk-in basis. While it is our goal to serve you in a timely fashion, you may have to wait for the next available advisor. Your patience is appreciated, especially during peak registration times.

When is the best time to meet with an advisor?

The best time to meet with an advisor is after admission, but before registering for classes each semester.

How often should I meet with an advisor?

Students should meet with an advisor each semester before registering for classes. It is in the best interest of students to maintain contact with an advisor throughout their period of study at Cecil.

How will the advisor assist me in reaching my educational goals?

The student and advisor work out an appropriate choice of courses based on the results of the skills assessments, past academic performance, curriculum choice, and outside commitments. The advisor can assist the student in staying on track.

Am I required to meet with an advisor?

Academic advising is required for all new students and highly recommended for returning students so that realistic educational plans may be made to facilitate graduation and, if desired, transfer to a 4-year institution.

How can I best prepare for a meeting with an advisor?

  • Review the college catalog, schedule of classes, and course requirements for your program of study.
  • Prepare a list of questions or concerns before each meeting with an advisor.
  • Be prepared to ask questions if you do not understand program requirements, policies, procedures, etc.
  • Review the academic calendar - do not miss deadlines.
  • Review your transcript and mark off courses you have successfully completed that are required for your program of study.

What should I discuss with an advisor?

  • You need to establish your skill level.
  • You need to discuss your academic and career goals.
  • Selecting a program of study.
  • Selecting courses to meet graduation requirements.
  • Selecting courses that will transfer as part of your program of study.
  • Experiencing academic difficulty in a particular class.
  • You are on academic probation (below a 2.0 grade point average).

How do I choose a program of study?

Students who need assistance selecting a program of study are encouraged to visit the Elkton Station Career Center to meet with the career advisor. To schedule an appointment with the career advisor, call 410-287-1000. Students can also visit the Career Center website.

How do I change my program of study?

Students requesting to change their program of study should meet with an academic advisor to complete a Change of Curriculum Form. The student's signature is required on the form.

How do I register for classes?

All new students are required to discuss their registration plans with an academic advisor. To schedule an appointment with an academic advisor, call 410-287-1000. Advisors are also available on a walk-in basis.

How do I choose my courses?

Advisors can assist students with course selection each semester. Students should schedule an appointment with an academic advisor to prepare for the upcoming semester (advisors are also available on a walk-in basis).

How many credits are considered full-time?

A full-time student is one enrolled for the equivalent of 12 credit hours or more. Students enrolled for fewer than 12 credit hours are classified as part-time.

What is the maximum number of credits I may take in one semester?

Students may take up to 18 credits during the fall and spring semester. To take more than 18 credits, students must have the written approval of an academic advisor.

How do I transfer to a 4-year institution?

Cecil College provides transfer information designed to assist students in making an easy transition into a four-year baccalaureate institution. More information on transfer services.

How do I find out if my credits were accepted for transfer from a previous college?

For students to receive transfer credit, the sending institution must be accredited by a regionally accredited agency or by an accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. After the evaluation has been completed, students will receive an unofficial transcript and letter from the Registrar. Other criteria are available in the catalog.

Do my grades from transfer credits count toward my grade point average?

Transfer credits are not calculated in the grade point average.

How do I apply for graduation?

Students must schedule an appointment with an advisor to complete the graduation application and graduation audit sheet. There are three graduation evaluation periods: December, May, and August. Filing deadline dates and degree conferral dates are:

Students must apply for graduation to begin the graduation clearance process. While students may graduate in the fall, spring, or summer, the College only holds one graduation ceremony in May.

Can I apply for more than one degree at the same time?

Students who complete course requirements for more than one degree may apply for two or more degrees at the same time. Students are encouraged to meet with an advisor for graduation checks.
