Introduction to Ready to Work Week – Room 221

Join Debbie Klenk, Dean of Career and Community Education, to kick off Ready to Work Week. Get your mind in gear to explore, discover and learn about all the opportunities that lie before you on the road to employment in a job you will love.

Check out the information tables to find the latest on career training through Cecil College. Each evening, Cecil College staff will be on hand to discuss other jobs and possible training programs you might want to consider.

Professional Truck Driver Training – Room 212

Professional truck drivers continue to play a critical role in the economy as transportation and material moving workers are involved in moving virtually everything we buy or touch. In addition to traditional trucking companies, today, Cecil County looks to help support the ever-expanding need for workforce at Aberdeen Proving Ground as they help our military stay ready for the challenges ahead. It should be noted that nationally, employment of these workers should increase by about 462,000 new jobs by 2016.

Health Care Careers – Room 221 (2 hour session)

Combining medical technology and the human touch, health care workers provide and administer patient care around the clock to millions of people, from infants to the elderly. For instance, medical assistant, dental assistant, medical coder and biller, medical transcriptionist, and medical receptionist are just a few of the health care careers out there. They work in a variety of settings from doctors’ offices and hospitals, to home care, to outpatient centers, to nursing homes, and more. You’ll be in demand because Maryland and many other states face a major shortage of numerous types of skilled health care workers.

Business Certificates (MCAS, Office Specialist, and other certificates) – Room 219

Learn about the exciting certificate programs available through our Business Training & Corporate Services department. Discover everything you will need to know about how to achieve the nationally recognized Microsoft Office Specialist™ (MOS). If you want a government job or want to stand out in the job market, this certificate demonstrates your proven expertise in Word, Excel and Access. This is an approved WIA Occupational Training program.

Our new Office Specialist program will provide you with the computing and soft skills to find success as an administrative professional. Find out about special scholarship funding for this new program from a new BRAC Higher Education Fund grant.

Certified Welder – Room 212

Hear about what it is like to find a job working in either the construction, maintenance or landscaping industries. These workers are part of an industry that requires many different skills. Usually, they work in ever-changing locations and work environments. They may handle tasks such as building houses, plumbing, ground maintenance, and building and equipment repairs. In a landscaping career, you would handle construction of patios, decks and sidewalks, as well as light and water enhancements and landscaping design and evaluation. Whatever your role in the industry is, every team member is as important as the next. So, whether your talent is working with your head or your hands, you can be sure there is a career in construction or landscaping trades for you.

Accounting & Bookkeeping Technician– Room 219

Just about every corporate business and non-profit organization has entry positions in accounts receivable, accounts payable, and payroll units. The Accounting and Bookkeeping certificate prepares students for positions with skills in preparing payroll documents, double entry bookkeeping, journal and ledger practice, and reconciling banking statements. This is an approved WIA Occupational Training program.

Auto Tech – Room 212

Learn from a working professional why a good auto tech is first and foremost, a problem solver. Today, the automotive service technician faces many more challenges than the mechanics of the past. What used to be a matter of just using tools now includes the world of technology. Today’s cars are complex machines run by sophisticated computer systems. And the people who fix those cars are highly paid automotive technicians, not car mechanics. The tech indentifies, as fast as they can, the causes of breakdown and then makes the repairs using the best solution.

Hospitality Certificate – Room 219

Find out how to prepare to work in hospitality services, the fastest growing industry in the world. By the year 2010, hospitality is projected to be employing 10.5 million workers in the U.S. alone. With tourism ranking at the top of the list for employment in Cecil County, opportunities exist with hotels, country clubs, conference centers, retail outlets, and restaurants. This is an approved WIA Occupational Training program.

Forklift Operator – Room 217

Another rewarding career in transportation, forklift operators are needed in a variety of businesses right here in Cecil County. Any company that loads or unloads freight, or has a warehouse of inventory, is in need of qualified forklift operators.

Learn how to log on and navigate USAJOBS, the federal employment Web site; search for appropriate job openings, review the qualifications necessary to qualify for vacancies, create a resume, and develop a narrative statement that addresses the selective factors used to determine the best qualified candidates. Discussion will also include background checks and performance based interviewing skills.
