Cecil College welcomes every opportunity to go green, including our commitment to the environment when planning the new Facilities building. This building features many sustainable and conservation-friendly assets. The building is located on the North East campus and utilizes insulated metal panels on the walls and roof, which are sustainable via energy efficiency. The light colors selected reflect the sun’s rays, the panels are continuously insulated to eliminate thermal bridging, and the building’s envelope reduces heating and cooling loads.

The building also features stone wool insulation. One of the most abundant raw materials on the planet, stone wool is fire resistant for occupant safety and promotes thermal stability. Air pockets contained in the stone wool allow the insulation to keep hot air out in hot climates and retain warm air in cold climates. Engineered to repel water, stone wool can protect valuable assets from the weather and promote the long-term health of this building and its occupants.

In addition, the Facilities building faces the south. The beneficial solar orientation of the building, combined with other energy efficient features, can reduce the need for auxiliary heating and cooling, resulting in lower energy bills, reduced greenhouse gas emissions and improved comfort.

Other special features of the eco-friendly building include:

Atrium Skylight

The skylight in this building reduces reliance on artificial lighting, thus reducing energy use and lightbulbs in landfills. In addition, it produces passive heating, thereby saving energy and lowering the building’s utility costs.

Sunshades

The sunshades on this building increase energy savings, reduce glare, and keep summer sun out while allowing winter sun in.

Dual Flush Toilets

The restrooms in this building feature dual flush valves which reduces this facilities water consumption by up to 45%.

Open Spaces

The open spaces adjacent to this building provide space for people to be active and interact with the environment. The mulch path that goes through the woods enables people to connect with nature while on campus and enjoy the benefits being outdoors.

Electric Vehicle Charging Station

The electric vehicle charging station located in the parking lot for this building supports the use of electric vehicles which help reduce carbon footprint by creating zero tailpipe emissions, running off of clean energy sources, and lowering dependency on fossil fuels.

To ensure the awareness of the special features of this building, signage has been created and installed at key locations in the building, informing the viewer of the eco-friendly features detailed on this page. Thank you for your interest in our commitment to the environment!
