Kunda to serve second term on Cecil College Board

NORTH EAST, Md. – Kathleen Kunda was sworn in for a second six-year term to the Cecil College Board of Trustees, strengthening the foundation of the institution’s governing body.
“I am excited to have this phenomenal opportunity to serve our students and the entire community. Cecil College fulfills the hopes and dreams of Cecil County’s youth and returning students. To be a part of changing someone’s life is amazing,” said Kunda.
Cecil College has thrived these past six years under the leadership and vision Kunda has provided through her work with the other members of the Board. The College experienced an expansion of academic programs and strong governance guidance and traversed a worldwide pandemic during her first term.
Kunda is active with the Cecil College Foundation, Cecil College student clubs, and College committees to ensure she fully understands the needs of students. This commitment, devotion, and passion have made her a prominent figure within the College community, and she has dedicated her professional career to ensuring Cecil County’s youth have every opportunity to own their future.
Kunda earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Wilmington University. She was hired by the Cecil County Public Schools, where she was the Business and Education Partnership Advisory Council coordinator and Base Realignment Closure liaison. She retired from CCPS in 2012 following 14 years of service.
Known as an influential networker with extensive experience in the field of education, Kunda was tapped to align STEM programs in CCPS and Harford County Public Schools with Cecil College and Harford Community College. Under her guidance, the program allowed all fourth, fifth, and sixth-grade students to investigate the opportunities in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
“I see Cecil College growing and continuing to play a vital role in the success of Cecil County. Community colleges are becoming the primary education system in our country to prepare students for the workforce, which is vital to our mission at Cecil College,” said Kunda, an integral member of the Board of Trustees that that helped navigate the College through the Covid pandemic. “The resilience of the students during this time has been extraordinary. Also, I am so impressed with the leadership at the College during the pandemic. The staff, faculty, and administration have performed extraordinary work preparing students for online coursework. Every department had to contribute to ensure the safety and success of our students.”
Away from the College, Kunda has served as an Americorp service-learning coordinator assigned to CCPS, served on the Women in Defense STEM Scholarship committee and the Boys and Girls Clubs board, and volunteered on the Northeastern Maryland Technology Council (NMTC), and the Susquehanna Workforce Network Youth Council. She is the recipient of the Mary A. Maloney Distinguished Service Award which honors individuals who are graciously dedicated to public service.
In the business community, she has served on the Elkton Chamber and Alliance Board, the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce membership committee, the Union Hospital Patient Advocacy committee, and was elected to the Cecil County Republican Central Committee.
She has been honored with the NMTC Visionary Award, Junior Achievement of Delaware Legacy Award, and named Cecil County Chamber member of the year. She was presented with the Athena Award honoring women who demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in professional and community leadership.
