Digital Arts and Media Design: The evolution of the Cecil College Visual Communications program
Published on August 28, 2025

NORTH EAST, Md: Cecil College is proud to announce the strategic transformation of its longstanding Associate of Applied Science degree in Visual Communications, now known as Digital Arts and Media Design. This change reflects the College’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality education while aligning the program more closely with current industry standards and contemporary terminology, making it easier for prospective students to discover the degree and seamlessly transfer to four-year institutions.
The newly named Digital Arts and Media Design curriculum centers around: digital imaging, graphic design, photography, web design, as well as video and film production. In a major refresh and redesign, all course offerings have been updated to reflect the latest trends and best practices in the creative industries, with continuous updates driven by robust feedback from a large pool of professionals on Cecil College’s advisory boards.
As part of the enhancements, select concentrations have seen curricular changes. For example, the Animation and Game Design concentration (previously Simulation Design and Gaming) now includes a new 2D animation course, expanding opportunities for students pursuing this pathway, and the Digital Commerce A.A.S. degree has been renamed Social Media Marketing.
“We pride ourselves on making sure we are teaching the latest industry equipment, software, and techniques,” said Dan Krukosky, Director of the Digital Arts and Media Design department.
Cecil College’s approach ensures that introductory Digital Arts and Media Design courses are taught by full-time faculty, offering new students ample access and support. In contrast, upper-level courses are led by working professionals who bring current industry insights into the classroom.
The program transformation also aims to enhance transferability. By aligning Digital Arts and Media Design with modern terminology and best practices used at other colleges and universities, Cecil College makes it easier for students to identify compatible programs and complete seamless transitions into bachelor’s degree pathways. The alignment of articulation agreements occurs regularly and new agreements with four-year institutions continue to be added regularly.
Cecil College continues to uphold excellence in delivering applied associate degrees. The reimagined Digital Arts and Media Design program exemplifies its mission to offer current, industry-grounded education in the digital arts and media space, building pathways for transfer, career advancement, and artistic innovation.
